Fishing can be a very relaxing and rewarding experience for you and your family. And fishing can be dangerous, as with any sport.
Bad weather, fishing tackle malfunctions, and snagged and tangled lines can cause a lot of grief if you haven't prepared ahead of time for such challenges.
When you've snagged your hook in the underbrush or your lines are all tangled go ahead and take immediate action to get it loose before you have a bigger mess on your hands. Sometimes it's easier just to break off the snag or the twig than to try to untangle it. Tangled lines can sure be frustrating.
If you cast your line toward a big log and have the unfortunate experience of it slipping over the top and getting hung up where you can't reach it. You break the line and leave your hook or lure but this can often cause problems for fish in the area if they see that lure bobbing in the water, grab it and can't get loose. Or maybe they'll even get hung up when you're gone back home, this can spell disaster for the fish.
Cuts and abrasions can occur when working with fishing equipment, because a lot of the instruments that you're using are sharp. Always include in your fishing equipment a first aid kit with some peroxide, medicated spray or medicated lotion, Band-Aids, and other bandages, cotton, or paper towel. This should be a regular part of your first-aid kit.
Keep track of your bait supply. If you think you are going to run short start dividing your bait into halves, or quarters to make it go further. Those smaller pieces won't deter a hungry fish.
When you're preparing to pack your clothes and fishing equipment for your trip check the weather. Knowing what the weather is forecast will help you to know whether you need warm, cool, or water resistant clothes. This can make the difference between a great fishing trip and a sour one.
When you are out on a lake or river watch the sky, tracking the weather is a great safety precaution to keep you out of trouble. If a storm should pop up suddenly head for shore. Be aware of weather conditions even on land so as not to get caught in a flash flood or lightning strikes.
Remember safety and preparation can mean the difference between a great fishing trip and disaster.
